December 2004 Dear StudioLine
User, With a little luck,
you’ll be sitting in front of lots of memorable photos once this
holiday is over. Fortunately, StudioLine Photo is better suited than any
other solution for keeping things organized. As expected, this
month our tips revolve around organizing. (Our examples assume that you have
upgraded to the new StudioLine Photo 2.5.11.) |

It pays to stay current! If you haven't done
so in a few weeks, use the "Check for Updates" option in the
"Help" menu.
In the latest update, any album or folder
can be viewed in a “flat” display. All images of a chosen folder
and its subfolders are displayed together. If necessary, the “flat”
display will be split into multiple pages to accommodate large volumes of
pictures.
The “flat” display option is
also available for the “Filtered” view. To collect images from various albums, search results or points in
time, simply switch to “Classifications” and mark images for
viewing in the new “Lightbox”.
In the lightbox, image previews can be
displayed larger to easily compare the different images. Of course, you have
access to everything StudioLine has to offer. Use the image tools to match up
color tones, create CD/DVDs, export to other applications or email for client
approval.

Monthly Tip #1 - Describe Images Automatically While Loading With StudioLine you can preset descriptor
values that will be used when new images are loaded into certain folders. One
application would be to automatically add your copyright notice so that you
won’t have to remember it later. ·
Open StudioLine Photo and switch to “Albums” view.
·
In the folder pane, click the right mouse button either on the
“Image Archive” root folder or on any other album or sub-folder. ·
Choose “Descriptor Defaults” from the context menu
to open the familiar Descriptors panel.
Keep in mind that any descriptor values you
enter should be suitable for all images intended for that specific folder (or
the entire image archive, respectively). When you import new images into the chosen folder,
they will automatically inherit the default descriptors you set up. Note: Any existing
descriptor values that may already exist in the image (e.g., an IPTC
“Copyright” tag) will not be overwritten. Also, images that are
simply moved from other folders will not be effected. |

Monthly Tip #2 - Cropping a Series of Images You’ve probably encountered the problem: Load images from
a Kodak Photo CD and all of them end up with an unsightly black border. With
StudioLine’s unique “Copy” button, you don’t need to
crop the border one picture at a time. ·
Select pictures of the same orientation (e.g., landscape vs.
portrait) for cropping. ·
From the Image Toolbox, choose “Crop & Rotate”. ·
Set the desired aspect ratio. ·
Click the “Copy” button (located at the top left
corner of the tool’s panel).
·
Turn off the option “Apply Rotation and Mirroring”
and click “OK”. |

|
Monthly Tip #3 – Keywords With a Twist If you haven’t used the new keywords
feature yet, you’re missing out on a great organizational function. ·
Open a folder with images for which you would like to assign
keywords. ·
Switch to “Classifications” view. ·
From the outline of keywords and categories, drag items onto the
appropriate images.
By assigning a keyword to an image, it will
be appended to the IPTC tag “Keywords” by default. These tags can
be included with exported JPEG files in the event you share your images with
other applications. You can choose that keywords are appended to
descriptors other than the IPTC “Keywords” tag. ·
Click the right mouse button on any keyword that you want to
associate with some other descriptor. ·
From the context menu choose “Set Target Descriptor”
and “Choose Target Descriptor”.
·
In the panel “Choose Target Descriptor”, pick the
desired target where this particular keyword will be appended. Note: If necessary, use
the keyword’s context menu to revert to the default target. |

Website
of the Month – StudioLine
Web Closing Deals on Classic Ferraris This month we spotlight a web site that was produced and is
being managed with StudioLine Web: www.MarioBernardi.com. Mario Bernardi is Thanks to my involvement
with classic automobiles I ended up with a large collection of prints and
slides of my cars. A friend suggested
StudioLine Photo to organize and archive my growing photo portfolio. Being a
computer novice, I had little interest in making my life more complicated
– until I finally sat down and my friend gave me a quick tour through
the software. I finally realized that there was little to learn and much to
gain. Encouraged by the
user friendly interface of StudioLine Photo and driven by the necessity for
my business to have a web presence, I moved on to StudioLine Web. I would
have never thought I would be able to put together web pages – but
it’s just a matter of composing text and images and clicking the
“publish” button. Voila, the results appear on the Internet. Within a few days I
had an attractive web page, featuring over 500 compelling photos. Now,
business associates and potential clients have immediate access to latest
information – in text and pictures. Today, I actually
enjoy optimizing my images with StudioLine, frequently updating my web pages
and saving time by simply emailing great looking visuals to interested
parties. Feedback from my web site visitors has been enthusiastic. In fact,
the web site was essential in establishing new business contacts and even
closing deals. |
